Cynthia Shaw was born on June 26, 1965 in Fort Lauderdale Florida, to the proud parents Albert Carl Shaw and Bernice Law Shaw. She is the eighth child of sixteen children. She inherited two other sisters that were cared for and fondly adopted by her parents when she was a child.

After graduating high school in 1983, Cynthia was not sure of her goals or abilities in life, she secured a job in a Daycare center. In 1984 her eldest sister encouraged her to enroll in night school to obtain a trade as a Medical Assistant, she graduated in 1985.

She soon started work in a Pediatric Physician’s office as a Medical assistant caring for well-babies, and non-urgent sick children. Later, she grew to want more, she wanted a career. She returned to the classroom and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 1991, proudly she began working in a subacute setting caring for the rehabilitation needs of patients requiring life-sustaining attention with ventilators and other acute care measures.

While working as an LPN, she wanted to move to the next level, but again, she was unsure of herself. One day, another nurse, who recently acquired her license as a Registered Nurse, challenged Cynthia to continue her education. The nurse enrolled Cynthia into school and paid for her first class. Cynthia knew this challenge was a blessing and a push for her to attain her dreams. She was determined to not let down this colleague who had so much faith in her, she worked hard, grew confident and achieved her Registered Nurse License from Broward College. She later became certified in Neurology, Orthopedics, and Infection Control. Cynthia is now seeking a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology and Infection Control.

She works at Westside Regional Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL as an Infection Control and Prevention Director. She coordinates Infection Prevention and Control of illness and disease within the facility she works and the surrounding community in Broward County. Cynthia also works as a Nursing Supervisor to the facility as needed.
